Animated Units for Age of Conquest III

Filed under: Development — noblemaster @ 10:42

Age of Conquest III will get a graphics overhaul. The goal is to add graphical depictions of armies as well as structures to give it a more game-like look & feel. The fortification display (currently checker board) will be replaced with an actual wall. The units will be displayed using actual icons of soldiers. Attacks as well as defenses will animated.

Small armies will be depicted with one soldier icon, larger armies using more:

  • Unit Size 1-999: 1 soldier icon
  • Unit Size 1000-3999: 2 soldier icons
  • Unit Size 4000-9999: 3 soldier icons
  • Unit Size 10000-19999: 4 soldier icons
  • Unit Size 20000+: 5 soldier icons

Attack animation for a large army (5 soldier icons):

The graphics production is financed by Android sales.

  1. Is this to replace the actual number of soldiers, 7845 with 3 soldiers or in addition to showing the actual number?

    Also will this be seem on the map by all the players or just with the use of a watchtower?

    I’m more concern about the tactical or play aspects than the appearance.

  2. The actual number of soldiers will be displayed as well. The number will be shortened to 3 letters/digits to make it more readable:
    384 = 384
    920 = 920
    1300 = 1.3k
    3348 = 3.3k
    23000 = 23k
    34803 = 34k

  3. What do you mean by AoC III?

    Will the new graphics come as an update or will we have to re-buy it?

  4. No worries, they will be included as an update for both Android and Desktop (Windows, Macintosh, Linux), so you won’t have to pay for it separately.

  5. I’m a bit concerned about clutter on the map. Will it be difficult to see province boundaries and that sort of thing?

    Also, I’m not sure I’m happy with the abbreviated soldier numbers. 34000 is a lot different than 34999 but both will be 34k in this system? Many is the time I’ve taken advantage of a watchtower to snatch a province from an enemy using only a tiny excess of troops (say 6090 vs 6010 for instance). Will there be an option to click on the enemy troops to get the more accurate troop number (if you have a watchtower adjacent to the enemy province)?

  6. No worries, province boundaries etc. will be clearly visible.

    Also, there will be a way to see the accurate troop number if you have a watch tower. E.g. clicking on province.
